Windscreen Repairs
Windscreen Repair is a process of injecting resin into a damaged part of the windscreen called a chip. There are limitations on the size and area of the screen that a repair can be carried out on.
How to identify whether your windscreen can be repaired
When you sit in your vehicle and look straight ahead make 2 imaginary lines running from top to bottom of your windscreen one on each side of the steering wheel. This is the ( A ) zone and the repair size in this zone is 10mm or the size of a 5 pence piece.
This is because the area in front of the steering wheel is called direct line of vision and the bigger the repair the chance of slight distortion increases, so we can only repair up to 10mm in the (A) zone.
Windscreen repairs for cracks and scratches
On the passengers side of the windscreen we can repair up to 40 mm or the size of a 2 pound coin. This is because this area is not direct line of vision for the driver and therefore repairs can be bigger than zone (A).
On modern vehicles there is a black band that goes all the way around the windscreen. This is called the obscuration band. Repairs cannot be carried out in this band.
A windscreen repair should take approximately 20 minutes and restores 100% strength back to your screen. It is also much cheaper than a full windscreen replacement and in most cases is free via your insurance policy. Please note if your insurance policy does not cover windshield repairs, you should expect a cost of approximately £45 +VAT.
Windscreen Repair Process
Vehicle Pre-inspection
When we arrive to carry out a windscreen repair service the first thing our technician will do is to ask you to accompany him to your vehicle whilst he carries out a pre-inspection of your vehicle and to check that the damage to your windscreen is within repair guidelines. (e.g. size and location on the screen).
When the technician is happy that a successful repair can be performed he will then begin to place protective sheets to both the interior and exterior of your vehicle. This is done to protect your vehicle paint work against a resin spill should one occur, but this very unlikely and is just a precaution.
Once the protective sheets are in place the technician will then place a small mirror to the inside of your windscreen so he can see the chip from the outside of the vehicle. Then he will place a small suction cupped tripod to the outside of the damaged windscreen over the chip to which the repair system is connected and held in place.
Then a small amount of resin is inserted into the chamber. At this point you should see the chip start to clear. When the technician is happy with the repair he will then remove the repair system and place a UV light over the windshield repair which will cure the resin.
When this is done the technician will remove the UV light and polish the repaired area, then clean the windscreen in side and out. This whole windscreen repair process should take between 10 and 20 minutes.
Please bear in mind that a Windscreen Repair is only a repair to a broken screen.
In the event the chip should crack whilst we are trying to repair it we can not except responsibility, and a windscreen replacement would be required at a cost to you or your insurance agreement.
They come round once a week to check our stock for windscreen stone chips, they are fantastic at stone chip repairs and are great value too.
